How to care for timber flooring

Simple cleaning and maintenance tips that actually work

Timber flooring is one of the best choices you can make for your home. It looks good, feels warm underfoot, and adds a bit of natural charm that never really goes out of style. But like anything in your house, it needs a bit of care to keep looking its best. Luckily, looking after timber flooring isn’t hard. You just need to know what to do, and what not to do.

We’ve put together some easy tips and info to help you keep your timber floors in great shape for years to come.

Regular cleaning

The biggest thing you can do for your timber flooring is regular cleaning. Sounds obvious, but it makes a big difference.

Start by sweeping or vacuuming your timber flooring every few days. Dust, sand and little bits of dirt can act like sandpaper over time if they’re left sitting on the surface. They can scratch your floor and wear down the finish.

Make sure your vacuum has a soft brush head. No spinning brushes or heavy rollers, they’re too rough on timber flooring and can leave marks.

A soft broom or dry microfibre mop also works well. The goal here is to keep your timber flooring free from anything gritty.

Mopping the right way

When it’s time to mop, don’t go overboard with water. Timber flooring doesn’t like too much moisture. A damp mop is good, but not wet.

Use a cleaner that’s made for timber floors. Not harsh chemicals or bleach. Avoid steam mops too. Even though they seem quick and easy, the heat and moisture can damage timber over time.

Here’s a simple trick: if your mop is dripping water, it’s too wet. Give it a good wring out before it touches your timber flooring.

Protect your floor from scratches

One of the best things about timber flooring is how good it looks. So, it’s a bit heartbreaking when it gets scratched. But there are a few easy ways to stop this from happening:

  • Use felt pads under chairs, tables, and anything that gets moved around a lot.

  • Keep pet nails trimmed. Dogs and cats can leave little marks when they run around.

  • Take shoes off indoors, especially high heels or heavy boots.

  • Put mats or rugs in busy spots like hallways or entryways.

These small things can make a big difference. They’re easy to do and really help your timber flooring last longer.

Deal with spills straight away

Spills happen. Whether it’s water, juice, or wine, it’s best to clean it up quickly. Timber flooring doesn’t like standing water. Over time, it can seep into the boards and cause warping or stains.

Just grab a clean, dry cloth and wipe it up. No need to panic, just don’t leave it sitting there.

If it’s something sticky, a slightly damp cloth is fine. Again, no soaking wet mops, just a light touch will do.

Keep the sun in check

Natural light is great. It brightens up a space and makes timber flooring look even better. But too much direct sunlight, over time, can fade or discolour the boards.

If your timber floors get a lot of sun, it’s worth using blinds or curtains during the hottest part of the day. You can also move rugs and furniture around now and then to stop uneven fading.

Humidity and timber don’t always get along

Timber flooring responds to the air around it. It expands when it’s humid and contracts when the air’s dry. That’s normal. But if the humidity changes too much, too often, it can cause issues like gaps between the boards or cupping.

Using a dehumidifier or air conditioner in summer and keeping things cosy in winter helps your timber flooring stay stable.

Re-coating and sanding

Even with the best care, timber flooring can start to look a bit tired after a while. That’s where sanding and re-coating come in.

You don’t need to do this often. Maybe once every 7-10 years, depending on how much wear and tear your floor gets.

It’s a good way to give your timber flooring a fresh start. It removes surface scratches, evens everything out, and brings back that rich, natural look.

Bonus tip: Choose the right timber to begin with
